NH-231 Raebareli to Jaunpur: When the Roadside Is the Story

AI road condition monitoring on a 166 km two-lane paved-shoulder national highway in Uttar Pradesh, a decade into its operating life

This is a project-level account from RoadVision AI's road survey programme for NHAI's UP (East) Regional Office, covering the 2-lane with paved shoulders (2L PS) section of Raebareli – Jaunpur, from km 0.00 to km 166.400 of NH-231 (new NH-31), in Uttar Pradesh. It sets out what the survey window of 22 to 24 September 2026 found, and why a road well into its operating life is exactly where an independent condition record earns its keep.

    ‍

    1. A Long Two-Lane Corridor from Raebareli to Jaunpur

This section of NH-231 (new NH-31) runs from Raebareli to Jaunpur in Uttar Pradesh, covering 166.400 km from km 0.00 to km 166.400. It is a 2-lane highway with paved shoulders. The survey record carries 165.73 km of road, divided into 1,645 segments at a 100 m chainage interval.

In the survey programme the corridor is tracked under the Raebareli PIU of the UP (East) Regional Office, as one of three roads in Weekly-Cycle-2. Because every finding is tied to a chainage, a corridor of this length can be read stretch by stretch rather than as a single average.

    ‍

    2. A Road a Decade into Operation

As publicly reported by NHAI, the section was implemented as a Regular Civil Works project under the NHDP scheme, on a BOT (Build-Operate-Transfer) Annuity basis. The Letter of Award is dated 31 July 2012, the agreement and appointed date 4 June 2014, and the Provisional Certificate of Completion 27 February 2016, ahead of the scheduled completion date of 3 June 2016. The awarded cost was ₹1,929 crore, against a total capital cost of ₹1,949.74 crore. A decade on, the picture on a road like this is less about the pavement and more about everything around it: encroachments, vegetation, drainage and upkeep, much of which sits across the responsibilities of the maintaining agency, the PIU and local authorities. A consistent, chainage-tied record shows what is wrong, how urgent it is, and whether it has been put right by the next survey.

    3. The Highway on the Map

Every finding sits on a live GIS map, with each inspection point opening to its exact location, the defect flagged, and the frame behind it in both original and AI-annotated form. Figure 1 shows the Raebareli PIU survey map for 22 to 24 September 2026. The inspection point opened in the panel, captured in Raebareli town on the morning of 24 September, belongs to the adjoining Raebareli to Banda section of NH-232, surveyed in the same weekly cycle. It is shown here because it captures the kind of finding that dominates this corridor too: unauthorized hoardings on roadside poles, flagged alongside cracking, rutting and faded marking in a single frame.

    4. What the Survey Found

The survey window of 22 to 24 September 2026 (Survey 2, Weekly-Cycle-2) covered 165.73 km across 1,645 segments. RoadVision AI logged 3,917 defects across 29 defect types. Unauthorized signboards and hoardings account for 1,244 (31.8%), faded or non-visible pavement marking for 797 (20.3%), shoulder vegetation growth for 512 (13.1%), garbage and debris for 420 (10.7%), water stagnation for 192 (4.9%) and cracking for 164 (4.2%). By severity, 97 defects are High (2.5%), 1,694 Medium (43.2%) and 2,126 Low (54.3%).

    5. From Findings to Action

Each survey gives the Raebareli PIU and the UP (East) Regional Office a defect ID, chainage and survey reference for every finding, independent of the agency doing the work. On a corridor of this length, a later survey of the same chainage shows whether each finding has been closed out, so that verification does not rest on the maintaining agency's own account.

    Our Commitment

RoadVision AI is committed to continuous AI road monitoring along NH-231 from Raebareli to Jaunpur, giving NHAI a consistent, chainage-level record of a long corridor that serves town and countryside alike. Keeping that record current, survey after survey, is how the upkeep of a mature highway can be shown to be doing its job.
