SaveLIFE Foundation's Collaboration with RoadVision AI for Enhanced Road Safety Management

SaveLIFE Foundation (SLF), a leading non-profit organization dedicated to road safety, partnered with RoadVision AI to conduct an extensive road safety audit on critical stretches of highways in India. This collaboration aimed to identify potential hazards, improve infrastructure, and implement AI-driven solutions to enhance road safety measures.

Road Safety

The Challenge

India's highways face multiple safety concerns, including:

  • Faded Road Markings: Lack of proper lane demarcation increases accident risks.
  • Damaged Crash Barriers: Ineffective protection for vehicles in case of collisions.
  • Missing Road Studs: Reduced night visibility for drivers.
  • Improper Signage: Missing or misplaced road signs lead to navigation issues.
  • Unauthorized Road Cuts and Parking: Hindering smooth traffic movement and increasing the likelihood of accidents.

SLF sought a comprehensive solution to identify, assess, and recommend safety improvements along a designated 115 km stretch on NH-48 in Maharashtra.

The Solution

RoadVision AI leveraged cutting-edge AI and Digital Twin technology to conduct a detailed technical road safety audit, covering both sides of the highway (230 km total). The audit process included:

1. AI-Powered Data Collection:

  • Smartphone-Based Visual Data Capture: Engineers used a mobile application to collect real-time imagery and GPS data.
  • Automated Identification of Hazards: The AI platform processed images to detect pavement distress, missing signage, and road safety issues.

2. Risk Assessment and Reporting:

  • Geometric Design Analysis: Evaluated road alignments, cross-sections, and median barriers.
  • Traffic Control Devices Evaluation: Assessed the placement and condition of road signs, signals, and lane markings.
  • Roadside Safety Inspection: Identified issues with guardrails, pedestrian crossings, and unauthorized road cuts.

3. Recommendations and Implementation:

Based on AI-driven analytics, RoadVision AI proposed targeted solutions in compliance with IRC guidelines, including:

  • Repainting Longitudinal and Thermoplastic Bar Markings (as per IRC: 35-2015)
  • Installing Road Studs and Reflectors (for enhanced night-time visibility as per IRC: SP: 84-2019)
  • Repairing and Replacing Damaged Crash Barriers (as per IRC: 119-2015)
  • Proper Placement of Chevron and Curve Sign Boards (as per IRC: 67-2022)
  • Closing Unauthorized Road Cuts to prevent accidents.

Key Findings

The audit identified multiple areas of concern, with key statistics including:

  • Total Road Length Audited: 115 km (both sides: 230 km)
  • Faded Markings Detected: 200+ locations
  • Missing or Damaged Signboards: 100+ instances
  • Damaged Road Studs and Reflectors: 150+ locations
  • Unauthorized Parking and Road Cuts: 50+ instances

Outcome and Impact

  • Data-Driven Decision Making: SLF now possesses actionable insights for targeted safety improvements.
  • Enhanced Road Safety Measures: Implementing AI-recommended measures has significantly improved road conditions and safety compliance.
  • Efficient Resource Allocation: The digital audit enabled SLF to prioritize high-risk areas for immediate intervention.
